Enabling a billion Indians to enjoy swimming safely and correctly begins with the way one is taught swimming and water safety skills through a structured aquatic education program. Teachers play a critical role in the successful delivery of any education program. Hence towards enabling and empowering current and future teachers of swimming and water safety along with swim coaches looking at improving their fundamental skill understanding, Swimming Matters has partnered with AUSTSWIM from Australia – the Australasian Council for the Teaching of Swimming and Water Safety – for the delivery of their courses.

Since November 2013, below are some of the key highlights:
Bangalore (16th to 22nd January 2017)
Moodabidari (23rd to 29th January 2017)
Till date across 60 courses over 650 swim teachers from 35 cities in the Indian subcontinent have participated in our training programs, 37 swim teachers have participated in the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Towards Competitive Strokes (TCS) course and 23 swim teachers have participated in the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Infants and Preschool Aquatics (INF) course.
In 2015, to further build on the work being done with us in India, AUSTSWIM’s project – Championing the Australian Way of Swim Teaching and Water Safety in India was chosen for the 2015-16 Australia India Council Grant. This enabled 2-time Australian Olympic Head coach Leigh Nugent to conduct workshops in India and facilitated seven AUSTSWIM swim teachers from India to travel to Australia to get first hand exposure to the aquatic programs there.
In 2017, in recognition of our work with AUSTSWIM in India our project with the Olympians Association of India – India SWIMS (Swimming and Water safety Is My Solution) to Prevent Drowning – has been one of six projects chosen worldwide by the World Olympians Association for the inaugural Service to Society Grants.
It’s been 35 years that I am a successful business person having built & run a swim school, trained hundreds of swim teachers the AUSTSWIM way & now pass on these skills to enthusiastic swim teachers in India – what could be more rewarding than knowing you’ve helped saved thousands of lives through a career you love.

I was a market analyst at Thomson Reuters Company and started swimming as a hobby, fell in love with it and have made it my passion. I made it a point to swim daily and have pursued my passion into my profession. It was a big leap of faith for me to leave a promising career with Reuters for swimming after becoming certified AUSTSWIM teacher. And today I am living my passion, making every day more exciting than yesterday..

Mother of two – 6 and 3. When my 6 year old was forced to jump at the deep end of the pool by her then teacher, she refused to get back to water. Heartbroken I went to Partha Varanashi who suggested that I do the AUSTSWIM course and teach my daughter myself. So I did my TSW course and started teaching her. She loves the water now. When it was time to teach my 3 year old I did the AUSTSWIM Infant and Preschool Aquatics course under Ceri Week’s guidance. I started teaching my kids at Bangalore club. Club members loved the way I taught the “AUSTSWIM” way of teaching. They wanted me to teach their kids as well. This encouraged me to take up swim teaching. Now I teach at Bangalore Club and Bangalore Golf Club.

I used to be a swimmer and diver way back in the 80’s and early 90’s. But when we used to swim there were hardly any facilities, no trained coaches where I grew up in a small town. I worked for 19 long years in the customs and logistics industry. In May 2014 I started my journey as a swim teacher and there’s been no looking back. AUSTSWIM TSW and TCS happened and the way I teach now has changed drastically. My focus is more on special kids and senior citizens. This year 5 of my special swimmers took part in the para-state competition and one has been selected for the nationals. I also run a Learn to Swim Scholarship for a few Govt School kids to encourage them to do well in their academics. These children now assist me as buddies to swim and assist my special swimmers. After this summer, if all goes well my focus would be only teaching children and adults with any and every kind of disability. I still have a long way to go as a Swim Teacher
